My local airport has recently been renamed from Teesside to Durham Tees Valley - How pretentious can you get. I preferred Teesside it is concise and describes the location. The bunch of businessmen who took it over didn't think Teesside was upmarket enough!!!

However the three letter code is MME. Goodness only knows how it got that. The RAF station which it grew out of was Middleton St. George which is closer but does not really fit.

The new name caused amusement in Schipol. The woman who opened the gate to let us on to the plane home once asked if we had renamed our city!
Well I suppose the airport is in County Durham <shrugs shoulders>
