I've occasionally looked for something from my halcyon days as a boy-soprano, a product which I remember as "Meloids" - could this be the "Altoids" several have mentioned? These came in a small tin, they were unappealing little brown cruds, tasted heavily of clove, if I remember correctly, but they sure worked.
