Thread Name: Lyr Add: Jesus Shed His Blood for Me(Fanny Crosby)
Subject: RE: Fanny Crosby? 'Jesus Shed His Blood for Me'
Rec'd from the Librarian of the Dictionary of American Hymnology Project:
Dear Leland, Our files do not have any information that would verify Fanny Crosby as the author of "Jesus shed his blood for me". There are two hymns with that same first line indexed for us from SELECT SONGS, 1935 and from HERALDS OF GRACE, 1898, but both cite other authors, namely Thomas S. Cobb and W.C. Martin. Crosy used many pseudonymns, but not Cobb nor Martin. There is also a hymn with the title "His blood was shed for me" by Joseph Moon in GOSPEL VOICES NO.3, 1902; but I don't think that's the text you are looking for. I hope this is helpful, Mary Louise VanDyke for Dictionary of American Hymnology, Oberlion College Library

To which I have replied
Thanks, Mary. I have the text (it's #183 in the joint Methodist-Presbyterian Korean hymnal Come, Let Us Worship) and am just trying to find authorship. It is set to the Doane tune NEAR THE CROSS; can you tell me the metrical nature of the Cobb and Martin texts, i.e. would they be of the 76.76 w/ ref. (the refrain being 66.76) form that would fit NEAR THE CROSS?
but have not yet heard back.
