Graveyard of the Pacific Shipwreck Week Hits Astoria; Coastal Communities Unite to Celebrate Maritime Heritage, 100th Anniversary of Peter Iredale Shipwreck
Historians, curators, marine experts and local residents are joining together to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Peter Iredale shipwreck during the Graveyard of the Pacific Shipwreck Week. With nine days of activities including artifact and photo exhibits, underwater archeology, stories from survivors, Columbia River Bar pilot demonstrations and festive sea shanties (songs), the commemoration offers unusual and lively ways to learn more about the Pacific Northwest's maritime heritage.
Made from iron and steel in 1890, the Peter Iredale washed ashore 100 years ago on Oct. 25, 1906, after attempting to navigate the treacherous mouth of the Columbia River through high winds on its way to Portland, Ore. Currently, the site provides a popular shipwreck to photograph because of its accessibility from the shore at Fort Stevens State Park. Still known as a dangerous crossing, the Columbia River Bar took on the name of the Graveyard of the Pacific with more than 2,000 vessels meeting their end where tumultuous river and ocean water collide.

Festivities will take place across the Astoria and Warrenton communities at Fort Stevens State Park, the Columbia River Maritime Museum and the Clatsop County Heritage Museum, in addition to Cape Disappointment State Park and the Ilwaco Heritage Museum located in Washington.

Wednesday, Oct. 25, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. The highlight of the nine-day celebration is the 100th anniversary, with a first-person interpretation of the wreck at the site of the Peter Iredale.

Clatsop County Heritage Museum:

See the past come to life during the "Talking Tombstones" program on Oct. 29 at the Greenwood Cemetery. During the entire month of October, the museum will also feature a Peter Iredale photography exhibit.

Ilwaco Heritage Museum

The museum will host a variety of actors and musicians performing shipwreck stories and sea shanties.

Columbia River Maritime Museum
Join a variety of local underwater archeologists, Columbia River Bar Pilots, authors, actors and musicians at the Columbia River Maritime Museum. Also, daily screenings of the vintage Route 66 episode, "One Tiger to a Hill," run at 1 p.m. Contact the museum for specific information.

Cape Disappointment State Park
The state park will feature daily talks at 1 p.m. about the Graveyard of the Pacific at their interpretive center. Both Astoria and Warrenton are located on Oregon's historic North Coast, where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean, 70 miles northwest of Portland. It is the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies and has a rich maritime history.

Regular admission fees apply to all participating locations. Parking at the Peter Iredale site at Fort Stevens State Park is free.
