The "hot air rises" is, in most residential areas, an overrated concept. Almost all rooms have sufficirent air circulation to mix things fairly well. It's easy enough to demonstrate: raise one arm and lower the other one. If you don't notice a dramatic difference in how warm or cold your hands feel, there isn't much of a difference. Skin is a pretty sensitive thermometer, at least for comparing temperatures.
