Thread Name: BS: Earthquake in Hawaii
Subject: RE: BS: Earthquake in Hawaii
From what I could find on web news, it appears that there was some damage to a few buildings. Some injuries were reported, but not confirmed. There had been no reports of deaths, and the main problems people were concerned about were loss of power, which was apparently widespread, and some difficulties with telephone communications.
One source suggested potential damage to many bridges and similar structures, with the biggest problem being inspection of the many that could have been damaged even though they expect to find few, if any, that actually will have been rendered unsafe. Apparently a couple of major roads were blocked by slides, but they seem not to be causing a lot of concern.
An early warning about the possibility of high waves in the area was lifted about 4 hours before the predicted time of arrival. Although a few people evacuated (or were moved) to higher ground, there appears to have been no significant wave effect.
Official assessments seem rather sparse, and most of the news reports quote only individuals who've communicated with mainland friends and relatives. Most indicate "inconvenience" more than danger.
Hopefully even the inconvenience will be brief, and no serious injuries or major damage will be found; but we'll keep sending our best hopes and wishes in their direction.
