I can explain the turnaround times: they were also sound check times. Hence the half hour thing. Several people said they really liked that: a chance between acts to get up and have a wander, instead of a long concert in the afternoon and another one the evening. With seated venues it can be awkward moving about a lot if you decide to go and see what's in the other room, and no one wants to feel stuck in a place when they'd rather be somewhere else. So the time between acts theoretically helped with that easy movement between gigs. I say theoretically - please let me know if you disagree.
