Look up "inverse square law", and calculate how near you have to be to a phone mast to get the same radio intensity as the phone placed 1cm from your brain. And observe that the further you are from a mast, the higher the transmitter power on your phone has to be.

Masts are ugly, as are telegraph poles, electricity pylons, road signs and road lights.
