This thread has drifted a bit....I've always been interested in the derivations of sayings and understood that the origional form of words was "who IN Dickens are you?....do you think you are?....was that? ect, was a reference to the huge number of varied characters in the novels of Charles Dickens.
I would guess the saying originated in the nineteenth century.
