Funny, I was just thinking about this song yesterday. (A long way from my usual English trad.) Bob White used to sing it years ago, he used to play The Ark in Ann Arbor fairly regularly, became a male nurse I think, though he was still doing some performing, but I haven't seen anything at all about him recently.

I always wondered who wrote the song. Thanks for the info and the memories.
