"Painfully obvious and trite" now. But in the early '60s, at the height of the cold war, they were somewhat more radical.That statement sort of reminds me of people who dump on Thomas Jefferson for writing that "all men are created equal" because of the implied put-down of women. This ignores the fact that for that time, just going that far was a radical statement.
Try judging people in the context of their times. The beliefs and attitudes of this decade will probably be considered obvious and trite in another 25 or thirty years.
