Gosh - for a moment I thought this was a thread about that excellent ceilidh band, Peeping Tom, from Coventry.

I don't think infra red is banned but aren't there rules about those light pen things used as pointers in lectures and so on. I know these are banned from some public places like football grounds but that might just be a local rule.
