Susan, Boycott comes from the Irish who rebelled against an estate manager from England named Boycott. By refusing to deal with him, Boycott found that he could get no service, workers, etc., and the tactic used in protest against him became known as a boycott. There's an old movie about this, a story of the Irish Land League crusade for reform and how Boycott became a household word. The Irish and English on Mudcat probably know this from history class in school.
