I have used Real Alternative on a clean version of Windoze ME and listened to BBC Listen Again programmes. I didn't have any problems with using it.
I think that Real Player just buggers up your sytem as a matter of course and when you uninstall it, it leaves so much trash in your registry that it continues to cause problems to punish you for uninstaling it.
