I cooked rice in a plain old iron pot for 30 years without any problem. When marriage brought me a T-Fal rice steamer as a wedding present, I discovered it has two great advantages: it doesn't take up space on the stove, and it turns itself off at the appointed moment. It also cooks rice just fine.
