The icepack is useful in early stages, but over 30 years later I still do the stretching as required.

I didn't mention it here, but I have previously mentioned in another back thread about how I built up the spinal rotators, which massively eased my discomfort, and hold things together pretty well - you need to be well healed out of the acute stage before trying that however.
