I think "not your father's folksinger" is a steal from the New Country marketing line "not your father's country music".Which means, of course, no Hank Williams, no Ian Tyson, no Patsy Cline unless sung by Leann Rimes, no Merle Haggard--just a bunch of pretty boys in hats!
As promotion goes, I don't think you can sink much lower than imitation New Country hype.
