Subject: RE: BS: Musician vs Someone-who-plays-music
Musicians might or might not be able to play many different styles or instruments--but I think that when you achieve musicianship it means that you are playing (and respecting) the music, and the instrument, however fine, is just a conduit between the player and the expression of the music.

Two ways to delay the achievement of musicianship are:

  1. not enough technique to express the music flowingly--solution is practice, patience and listening
  2. too much technique--getting stalled on playing the instrument perfectly or flashily or weirdly, so that the player never reaches through to the music itself. Solution is more difficult, but if the player can learn to relax, listen and (almost always) play fewer notes better, prognosis is good.
