Here's a couple about public libraries:
A few years back in New Hampshire a library was cleaning out the attic and found an old painting of George Washington. An original Gilbert Stuart...a very valuable thing indeed!
The Kenton County Public Library, back in 1972 or so, was moving out of the old Carnegie building and into its new quarters. The attic was checked as part of a final goodbye sweep, and an old, old box with stuff in it was found. Good thing, too -- both volumes of the Elephant Folio edition of Audbon's "Birds of America". The US$172,000 they got for it at sale was the seed money for their Library Foundation.
I've been up in the attic here several times. I can assure you that if there is a value for dust, we're very very wealthy.
