I've seen one classic funnel, skipping in country fields stirring up dirt, long ago in Minnesota; that one didn't hit anything of consequence. In Arkansas in 1971, I heard the classic "freight train" sound of one from where we took shelter, but never saw the thing; it uprooted a few trees and did minor household damage in town.
Little dust devils were about as common as mosquitos in southern Minnesota; generally they were more like something to muss up the dogs hair than something to tip a cow.
