Thanks everyone. I've decided it must be faulty so I'm sending it back.

The only manuals they have online or on the CD etc. are a copy of the hard copy one you get with it - as I said, it's not very detailed and certainly doesn't explain what all the menus and options are, which is what I wanted to know.

But I reckon it's faulty anyway, so I think that was the problem, rather than just my stupidity/ignorance. There's a sort of pad in the middle and you select things using the top/bottom/left/right. The right hand side selection 'button' seems not to work, hence the problem.

A pity, as I got it mail order from Amazon, so I doubt I'll be able to get a replacement before Christmas at this time of year :(
