Subject: North Mississippi Allstars
We got a HD television a couple of weeks ago, and I'm discovering all sorts of new (for me) music. Tonight, I happened to click on the TV, and here comes this young white kid... looks like he's in his twenties .. stolling out onto the stage. He picks up a cigar box, one string guitar and whips right in to Mississippi Boll Weavil, capturing all the feel of the Masked Marvel recording on the Anthology Of American Folk Music. The guitar was plugged in, and the group has a black electric bass player and a drummer. They call themselves the North Mississippi Allstars. Turns out, they must have been around a long time, as they have something like five albums out. I went right in, checked out Amazon.com and ordered one of their CDs... something about an electric watermelon. The first cut on the CD is Mississippi Boll Weavil, and I really wanted to have it.

Now, if electricity shocks you, they may not be the band for you, but how cool is it that some kid in his twenties, who comes off a little like John Fogarty, is making his own cigar box, one string guitar, playing it with a slide and sounding like the Masked Marvel recording.

Way cool, I'd say.

Anybody else heard of these guys?

This is an American thread (maybe we need a prefix, just so's you English Cats know we iz still around.)
