Hay-on-Wye is a lovely little border town that someone transformed into a used book store a number of years ago - once one got going successfully, other people joined in, and that's about all there is in the town. I found my copy of the Susann Palmer hurdy-gurdy book there - I am convinced that by the time I walked from the shop that gave me the info to the shop that actually had a copy, the price had doubled.
I don't know who gave the Welsh their spelling, but it's far more phonetic than English - remember that "w" is a vowel with a "oo" sound. But there are enough native Welsh speakers on this forum who would explain it far better than I.
(Reminder to self - must learn some Welsh chanteys).
