Yesterday, for the third week in succession on my radio programme, I played John McCutcheon singing "Christmas in The Trenches" with no apologies. The line in the final verse, "The ones who call the shots won't be among the dead and maimed" gets to me every time. I read somewhere that McCutcheon had received an award for one of his books and the deal included dinner at the White House. He was going to present Bush with a copy of "Christmas in The Trenches"! I wonder if it happened.
