The mandolin tuning is the opposite of the four bass strings of a guitar. The GDAD tuning is the opposite of the four bass strings of a guitar tuned DADGAD and ist seems to give the same droney/modal sound as a DADGAD tuned guitar. I own an Octave mando and tune it GDAD
