There's also a belief among city people that there are animal doctors that work for free. In my 20 years as a ranger, I've had to put quite a few deer out of their misery after they had been hit by cars. It's no problem if there are no people around, but if there are, the first thing they ask is "Isn't there an animal hospital you can take it to?" I usually ask them if they want to pay the bill. That's when they decide it's ok to kill it. But occasionaly, you get someone who insists that I put the deer in my patrol car and take it to a vet. I've tried to explain that if the deer regains consciousness, it will panic and probably kill me, but they've seen "Bambi" and they know that deer are cute and cuddly and fully understanding of human compassion. The deer will sit quietly in my car and be grateful. Sometimes they'll even stand between me and the deer. On those occasions, I would just leave. So far, no one has filed any complaints about me. Some of us have even been asked to rescue deer that have fallen through the ice into rivers and lakes. If the deer fell through, so will a human. And, again, the deer just don't understand compassion. They'll kick the daylights out of anyone that comes near them. I hate to see an animal die that way, but it's not worth risking my own life.
