An oath is either a promise or a statement of fact calling upon something or someone that the oath maker considers sacred -- usually a god or book representing that god -- as a witness to the binding nature of the promise.

Why would anyone want someone of another faith to swear on a Christian Bible instead of his or her holy book?

And, as pointed out earlier, no book, holy or otherwise, is required.
