Perhaps if one were to slice two hotdogs lengthwise and serve them between two pieces of bread that would be a hotdog sandwich. Maybe it's the bun that produces the linguistic anomaly.

But why is a sandwich made from a round disk of ground beef called a hamburger while the disk itself, sans bread, is called a hamburger patty?
