I downloaded a PC version of Melody Assistant some time ago and did a little playing around with it. While I prefer (rather more expensive) CakeWalk for MIDI, I felt it was well worth the $15 that they were asking for the registered version and as you rightly say, it does support other formats including ABC.

Assuming the Mac version is similar, it has to be worth a look.
