Wiki suggests that the "true" shakuhachi (length 1.8 shaku [Japanese foot] = shaku + hachi [eight]). A 2.4 shaku instrument would be in A ... and a "low" D would be about 3.6 shaku ... however, the same Wiki entry suggests they are only made up to a size of 3.3 shaku!

I'm sure someone (less bound by tradition) has made one in low D ... if not from the traditional bamboo, then from wood ... of even PVC pipe!
