On closer inspection it turns out that what we thought were tulips sending up shoots are really irises, which is a good thing because even though a subsequent freeze will kill the shoots, the plants should survive, which would not be the case for tulips or garlic. We have lost our garlic crop in the past due to an early thaw and refreeze and would hate to have it happen again as it means obtaining new seed stock and starting all over, not to mention losing a year's supply of home grown.
