The problem with diesels, in the US at least, is that the oil companies won't make sufficiently-low-sulfur fuel for a modern diesel's emission control system to work. It's available in Europe, and the diesels work jes' fine--low emission, no big batteries, extremely well-proven technology, lots of power, good economy.
