My first (and only true) hybrid car was the van I drove in 1970. Hybrid is probably not the most accurate description. In fact it was a composite construction of three ex-GPO Morris Minor vans given to me by a current Westminister MP. He was clearly much less concerned about the niceties of the law in those days. I did not - and do not - complain, btw.

A cracking vehicle, its major drawbacks were that it needed a leg wrapped round the gearstick in any gear above second, else the bugger would pop out; it also njeede a judicious elbow placed so that the driver's door would not drift open on sweeping left-hand turns. A few tricky moments on the Limerick to Charleville road needless to say.

But, boy, what a great space for a double mattress!
