re: cats as beneficial predators, this, again, from Portland Audubon: "In fact there is nothing natural about cats. They are a domestic animal that exists at much higher numbers than any native predator species. They do not face the same ecological controls that quickly bring other species into balance and in situations where cats do face natural controls such as coyote predation, many cat owners issue a quick to call for removal of the threat."
