I have to disagree. Put My Little Shoes Away et al when sung sincerely are moving. If the singer respects the song, it can be put across. If the singer goes for "over the top" maudlin effect, it becomes laughable.
Helen Shneyer could perform this material both ways.
Listen to the Blue Sky Boys version of "Shoes" and you will see what I mean.
