I"m just an old ex -matelot who loves folk-music, not an academic ,nor an historian, so I have little,if any,knowledge of what people sang or hummed before there was Church Music---which was when,pray ?? ( no pun intended !! ) I thought that there was a remarkable similarity between a song about a Blacksmith,as rendered by the delightful Shirley Collins,and the hymn " To be a Pilgrim " (to give but one example---try listening to the late,great,Tony Rose as well ), but not for one fleeting instant did it cross my mind that that,or any other hymn- tune,could have had its origins in our pre-Saxon past !!! Kindly elucidate !!
