Part of it's the all-volunteer armed services. During Vietnam, the draft made it personal. A young person today may not be in favor of the war, but the fact that he won't be forced to personally participate in it makes it less likely that he'll make a public stand.
Even the majority of those who know people who've been killed or wounded in Iraq look at it as "He was doing what he believed in." not "He didn't want to be there and his life was wasted for no reason." Cindy Sheehan's the exception, not the rule.
