Now there's our Marymac with a fine and important distinction, brought out in the best Mudcat manner. What is the difference between "good" sappy and "bad" sappy -- is it the degree the sentiment is thought/seen to be uncontrived and genuine? I have always loved "The Rose of Tralee" for that reason, even though it could definitely qualify as sappy. And as kendall points out the "Green Berets" song has a very contrived sappiness to it which puts it on his 'bad sappy' list.
