Well, we always had separate parts for every instrument in the orchestra from the time I was 8 years old to graduated from high school and beyond. I *think* we had to rent them, but these days it's a cinch for them to be printed out from a coplete score. The piano/solo thing would be a "study" score, from what I know. The only time I remember a score having to be written out was when we bugged our teacher to orchestrate "Love is Blue" for us so we could play it, which he did. (He was SO kewl! Thanks, Mr. Ashley!)
