I challenge you to name one Socialist that ever made it to Congress before Bernie Saunders from Vermont.
There were some liberal Democrats during FDR's administration, but there were also a lot of conservative Democrats from the South.
FDR's vice-president, Henry Wallace, for the term before Harry Truman, certainly talked like a Socialist. It's a pity that FDR dumped him for his 4th term run.
FDR's wife Eleanor was certainly liberal, and active politically, more so than any previous Presidential wife.
