My relatives taught me that those who resort to such hateful words

1) are TRYING to hurt you - remember 'sticks & stones' - you CAN REFUSE to be hurt if you DON'T ACCEPT the premise of their remarks.

2) are demonstrating their lack of intellect/education. The more educated/intelligent DON'T have to ACCEPT the premise of their remarks.
