I'm listening to one of the Rex Stout Nero Wolfe mysteries now. I recently listened to some Agatha Christie Poirot mysteries, read by David Suchet (who plays the character in the most recent series). It has been my observation that the author is not always the best person to read their own work. With the exception of Louise Erdrich, who reads as beautifully as she writes.

One of my favorites that I've listened to more than once is To Kill a Mockingbird (the version recorded by Sally Darling is marvelous). And an author like William Faulkner who sometimes confounds readers with his punctuation comes to life in recorded books.
