I know that a coggie is a wooden bowl, but I am wondering what it represents in this song:
Cauld Kail in Aberdeen
There's cauld kail in Aberdeen
and castocks in Strathbogie;
When ilka lad maun hae his lass,
Then fye, gie me my coggie.
My coggie, Sirs, my coggie, Sirs,
I cannot want my coggie:
I wadna gie my three-girr'd cap
for e'er a quine on Bogie
There's Johnie Smith has got a wife
that scrimps him o' his coggie,
If she were mine, upon my life
I would douk her in a bogie
Coggie = wood bowl
three-girr'd cap = three-ringed cup
quine = young woman
bogie = the river(there are more verses but I think this gives you the idea) I'm guessing the coggie represents a man's earnings, all he has to make him comfortable in life (your cup is full). But then the three ringed cup must have some significance as well. Any ideas?
