How would you prove the statement anyway - statistics? I would think it is difficult to prove hence the "I don't have to convince you". I think Jeffp's "Just reply, "I don't believe you," and leave it at that" is the best idea. It was probably said without any thought in the first place, or maybe it was said to provoke!
