Thread Name: Lyr Req: Lough Sheelin Side
Subject: Lyr Add: LOUGH SHEELIN EVICTION
This text is given in "Song and Story: An Anthology of Irish Folk Songs," edited by Michael D. Morrissey, 2001, part of which can be viewed at Google Book Search. No source was given, at least in the part I was able to see. I have boldfaced the words that are different from the version posted by Jim McAuley above.

LOUGH SHEELIN EVICTION

Farewell, companions, a long farewell
Such bitter anguish no tongue can tell

For I'm forced to sail o'er the ocean wide
From my cottage home by Lough Sheelin's side.

How proud was I of my girl so tall
I was envied most by the young men all,
When I brought her blushing, a bashful bride
To my cottage home by Lough Sheelin's side.

But all our joys were too good to last.
For the landlord came our young hopes to blast.
In vain we pleaded for mercy, no
He turned us out in the blinding snow.

No one might open to us their door
Or else
his vengeance would reach them sure.
My Eileen fainted in my arms and died
On that fearful night by Lough Sheelin's side.

They have laid her down in the churchyard low
Where in the springtime sweet daisies grow.
Sad tears were shed for the fond young bride
At my Eileen's grave
by Lough Sheelin's side.

Farewell, companions, farewell to all.
The
ship will soon take me far away.
But my fond heart will still abide
Near my Eileen's grave by Lough Sheelin's side.
