Thread Name: BS: Geraldo to open Jesus tomb
Subject: RE: BS: Geraldo to open Jesus tomb
I have long had the opinion that (1) Jesus was married, and (2) his wife was almost certainly the woman characterized as "Mary Magdalene" in the later writings which are preserved in the modern Bible, and that she was his legal wife and life partner and most definitely not a prostitute. As to whether they had any children, I have no opinion on that. As to whether he physically resurrected? No strong opinion on that either.
Mary Magdalene was clearly a person of great influence in the early Christian church, but she was going directly against the stream of convention to be a leader at that time, because she was living in a strictly patriarchal Jewish society. I think that the movement centered around Paul later rewrote various things and censored others and invented still others in order to minimize her role as much as they could. I do not regard Paul's weird ideas as being much in the spirit of Jesus' original teachings at all, and I think he very much twisted and altered those teachings to detrimental effect, and caused the Christian church to veer off into some doctrines which are unhealthy, to say the least. I consider modern Christianity to be something only vaguely related to Jesus. It ought to be called "Paulianity" instead. ;-)
