I've started using washing soda to cut down on the amount of detergent I use. Again, it doesn't take the amount they say. The box says to use a half-cup, but a palmful (2T, maybe) softens the water enough.

Ammonia may be bad for the environment, but a little bit in warm water will remove blood from cloth better than anything else I've ever tried.
