The J Arthur Rank gong was made of papier mache. The instrument that actually made the sound was a small tamtam; it's in the Reid Musical Instrument Museum in Edinburgh, with an accompanying explanation. I've got a tamtam almost the same (bought it in a car boot sale) but haven't yet found a way of using it in a session. Maybe I could bring it along to wherever Scrump plays?
