Also boats, There are boat tours of the monuments, to Mt Vernon, to Old Town Alexandria, etc. Or you can rent a canoe or kayak from the National Park service and paddle around the Potomac yourself and see everything from the water. It's very safe in the monument area as there is very little boat traffic, and what there is has to go dead slow. I have a bunch of the relvant websites and brochures.
