Amos suggested one thing that has worked here. The pit bull caught a big male squirrel one day this winter. I was surprised at the size of that sucker. These are red squirrels, like fox squirrels, very large and very long. This squirrel weighed at least 5 pounds, probably more.

My dogs are pests at the bird feeder, so I had to relocate it around the house out of the yard where they stay. I would find the dog poop filled with undigested seed. :-/ Since moving the feeder I've seen a couple of squirrels attempt it, but it is meant to be squirrel proof and generally does a pretty good job. I toss some seed on the driveway for the squirrels and bigger birds. The feeder is mostly small birds, and there is a nearby finch feeder, a bag full of thistle seed.
